Water Sports - Swimming

Swimming, or the action of swimming, refers to methods that allow human beings to move in water without any propulsive force other than their own body energy. Among human activities, swimming covers moving on the water surface and underwater (diving, synchronised swimming, water polo), diving and various games played in the water. It can be practised in swimming pools, open water (lake, sea), or white water (river). Swimming has been an Olympic sport since 1896 for men and since 1912 for women. Today, only four swimming techniques are standardised for competitive purposes by the sporting institution and commonly taught: butterfly, backstroke, breaststroke and crawl.
