French savate boxing is a combat sport which consists of two opponents wearing gloves and slippers hitting each other with their fists and feet. It first appeared in the 19th century in the tradition of French fencing, whose vocabulary and spirit it has adopted. Known from the very beginning as "savate" or “art of savate”, throughout the 20th century, it was referred to as “French boxing”, and was finally officially renamed “savate boxing” in 2002.
